Bike Maintenance Training

Teaching maintenance skills & boosting confidence, unraveling the mysteries of bicycle technology & maintenance.

All about wheels, tyres & tubes

Starting at the absolute beginning…

Confidently knowing how to remove and correctly refit a wheel, remove a tyre and fit an inner tube – every cyclist should have this ability. I’m often asked to spend time teaching this ‘must have’ skill. The thought of having a puncture and not being able to fix it and get back on the road can be a barrier and stop you going out on your bike.

I’ll cover everything you need to know about your specific wheel and tyre setup.

Get to know your bike

How well do you know the parts of your bike? Would you be confident ordering parts. What type of cassette do you have? What information do you need to order a replacement disc? Do you have a press fit or threaded BB… and more!

This session will build a spec sheet for your bike – not a tech spec you’ll find on the internet, but a user friendly, simple list of parts and sizes. And because you help to compile the list, you understand the information on the list.

Basic maintenance – building confidence

Starting with the basics, this session covers all the fundamental ‘know how’ you need, enabling you to confidently check your bike for issues, keep an eye on parts that wear out, and how to lubricate a bike properly. I cover how to deal with the most common problems such as punctures, and what kit you should carry while cycling in case something goes wrong.

Intermediate maintenance – checks & adjustments

Bike maintenance, and making adjustments are all about following a ‘process’. I teach these processes.

Once you understand the process for each part of your bike, checks and adjustments become much easier to understand, you have more successful outcomes and they are quicker to carry out.

Custom ‘One to One’ or group sessions

Tap into decades of experience. You might want to spend some time getting to grips with a specific component of your bike, or a certain technology.

Let me know what ideas you have and we’ll arrange something to suit!

Neil McGowran

introducing myself

I don’t know if I can put a number on how many people I’ve tought bike maintenance too, helping to build their confidence and maintenance skills. I’ve delivered in different formats including in person training, online, one to one and group sessions. These have been to kids from the Scouts and the YMCA, and adults including Military Vets, Cycling clubs, Companies, Families, Teachers & University Students. There have also been so many everyday commuters and leisure cyclists, riding varying types of bike and with a wide range of mechanical knowledge.

Decades of experience

Spend a couple of hours tapping in my wealth of knowledge.

After almost 4 decades in the bike industry, I’ve pretty much seen and experienced every aspect of bike maintenance, repairs and problems that can occur. I can guide you through the process of bike maintenance with my fun and relaxed style, and before you know it, you will be learning and gaining confidence that you will be able to use in your everyday cycling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the core questions I’m asked about my mobile bike repairs & bike servicing.

Can you give my bike a health check?

Yes, a health check is a check of each part of the bike. Checking for wear, adjustment and function. These are essential for bikes that may not have been ridden for some time. I’ll let you know what is ‘Green – OK’, ‘Amber – Requires Attention’ or ‘Red – Unsafe/Not Working’

Do you only do ‘mobile‘ work?

No, although most work including bike repairs, bike servicing and maintenance training is carried out at your home, I can also collect your bike and return it when the work is complete. This is often preferred if you don’t have much available time.

What hours do you work?

The service I offer is aimed at making things super convenient for you. So, if I’m available, this means weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons and evenings are all possible. It’s your bike, at your location and at your convenience!

Do I receive any paperwork?

Yes, absolutely. No matter what work/service I carry out for you, you can receive details of what I have carried out and the associated charges and receipt.

Do your bike service prices include parts and labour?

Parts are always an additional charge. But a labour charge to fit parts depends on the type of service you book. Info on each service can be seen here. Alternatively, use the form below to get in touch and ask any further questions.

How do you take payment?

Payment is preferred by card, but cash can be accepted (although I don’t carry cash notes or change with me). Card payments are via a card machine and receipts can be sent directly by email or SMS.

Will you travel to my area?

My core region is Newcastle and it’s surrounding areas such as Ponteland, Gosforth, Jesmond, Heaton and Kenton. I do travel to most ‘NE‘ postcodes for mobile bike repairs and bike servicing, and I’ve also visited ‘SR‘ and ‘DH‘ postcodes for event work too.

Do you service & repair Electric Bikes?

At the moment, I’ll happily repair and service any mechanical aspect of your eBike, and I do this for lots of my customers.

But keep checking back in 2025 for news relating to eBike servicing!
